Laphroaig or Stolichnaya?

I have been wondering of late what ‘good taste’ really means. Is taste artistic or is it a way of looking down at the social ladder with subtle contempt?

Taste is more often than not ‘acquired.’ When a person has the will, interest, advantage, opportunity and substantial exposure to something that is not readily or intellectually available to the herd, it is ‘acquired taste.’ When we talk of music, food or drinks, and we venture out of the normal course and in due time hope of learning to enjoy it, we consider ourselves to have ‘good taste.’ Listening to Sergei Rachmaninov, indulging in some French haute cuisine, or learning to differentiate between bourbon and whiskey and standardizing on Laphroaig’s single malt smoky whisky or Stolichnaya vodka could be a social divider or acquiring an artistic taste.

When a person becomes a celebrity he becomes aware that he is being watched and listened to with extra interest. He puts on a mask. But when he is watched, input ceases and he goes deaf and blind in his created world. One can either see or be seen. One can’t do both
