Like happiness, increasingly the perception of liberty and freedom seems to appear mythical. The Net was once thought to be a truly global network. Not today.
In comes ‘Edward the Terrible,’ spy or 'NSA Leaker' to some and whistle-blower to others. He went ‘bonkers’ and decided to spill the beans. Now because of his insanity, we know that the National Security Agency (NSA) accesses our Emails, Phones, Videos, Facebook accounts et al by pressurizing US internet companies to divulge data. Perhaps the US government passes on these data to private contractors (who should not be having them) and make huge profits.
At these present times the possibility of ‘Talibanising’ the net into geological or judicial environment is not really far off. So far the western powers, specifically the US had been governing and controlling the Net. Going forward we may soon be heading towards an era where Europe may have their ‘European Network,’ and countries like Iran, China, North Korea, Russia, and the bulk of the Islamic countries may follow suit. No US based internet companies might be trusted in the future, when people realize that Apple, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft et al are nothing but just essential elements of US cyber surveillance scheme.
We are presently thinking of sending out our data to the cloud. If we are thinking of cloud computing, then let us think again. There will be an increasing trend towards monopolization and privatization of cyber space. If we are to strife for and value our privacy and ownership - then perhaps the concept of cloud computing may merely end up as a fad.
In any case, we have failed to understand the message from Snowden the Insane. We are apparently too concerned about his whereabouts, his physical appearances, his rejections of asylum request from the brave countries, his traveling plans, whether he will move to Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia or Venezuela, whether he will get a temporary Russian Visa, whether he will adopt Russian culture or learn the Russian Language, whether he will complete Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, his state of mind (if he has any). We are not bothered about how NSA works in our truly networked world and which grotesque direction the system might be moving.
We are irredeemably apathetic
